OUR PHILOSOPHY
HOW WE TEACH AT LITTLE WILD ONES
Rooted in the Italian Reggio Emilia philosophy, Little Wild Ones offers an intentional, collaborative learning environment for toddlers and early preschool-aged children. We believe that young children are more engaged when their natural curiosities are nurtured in a space that respects their ideas, values their perspectives, and encourages daily exploration.
Our philosophy is grounded in the belief that all children are competent, confident, and capable beings whose curiosities need to be nurtured. At Little Wild Ones, children are encouraged to pursue their interests and lead the direction of our curriculum and their learning.
Supported by primary field experience and academic research, we have validated that when we engage children through their interests and curiosities, they are more likely to engage with activities for longer, show more continued interest and develop the confidence to proceed to competence..
Rather than preemptively direct the child’s activities, we leverage his or her’s curiosities and scaffold development through foundational learning pillars such as literacy, numeracy, oracy, motor skills, collaboration, and artistic expression—all gateways for a healthy learning trajectory.
Our curriculum is built around open-ended provocations, which are Reggio-inspired project-based learning opportunities conducted in small groups. Unlike traditional schools, there isn’t a prescribed outcome; instead, these provocations are designed to stimulate ideas, initiative, and imagination among the children, whether they choose to explore them collaboratively or individually.
Our intentional program prepares children for not only the next chapter of their learning journey, but also for a fast-paced, dynamic and competitive world. We aim to, empower them to think critically, approach challenges creatively, and build positive relationships with others.
OUR APPROACH
Highly intentional
whole child development
At LWO, we take great care to meet the unique, individual needs of each and every child that enters our classroom. We observe, listen, document, and reflect on the daily experiences of our students, producing tailored and tuned learning opportunities aligned with their natural curiosities and developmental stages.
One of our core beliefs is in the power of documentation to make each child’s learning visible–deepening their understanding and celebrating their achievements. We document children's progressions, thoughts and discoveries through photographs, videos, written reflections and displays of their work. This documentation serves as a tool for reflection, dialogue, and ongoing assessment.
Lastly, we prioritize a whole-child development approach, rather than a subject focused curriculum. The following developmental areas are intentionally integrated into the daily, weekly and monthly curriculum:
Social emotional learning
Creative problem solving
Motor skills
Oracy
Literacy
Numeracy
Logic & reasoning
Collaboration
Social awareness
Artistic expression
Nature-based play
Garden-to-classroom nutritional learning
